An English Lawn Abroad

British lawn in Tenerife

A very British looking lawn beneath palm trees in Tenerife

Having just returned from a welcome break in Tenerife, I’m still surprised at how the Canarians have adopted the great British lawn and do their utmost to make all of us “tourists” feel at home by planting grass almost everywhere.

It’s been several years since I holidayed in the Canary Islands and I cannot deny that grass is well and truly taking over.  There are verdant green golf courses, lawns in front of hotels (15 years ago, the landscaping was volcanic earth interspersed with prickly pear cacti), lush green borders to the promenades and the Loro Parque has introduced lawns where visitors are encouraged to sit and relax.   It must be costing the country an absolute fortune in irrigation but it’s awfully flattering to think that traditional British landscaping is being emulated all around the world.

  1. green turf in the Canaries – mud and frost at home! I wonder how sustainable all that grass is though
